If you’ve ever shaved your legs only to be left with tiny dark dots, visible hair follicles, rough texture, or little red bumps, you’re definitely not alone. “Strawberry legs” is the common name for this frustrating appearance, and it can be especially noticeable after shaving or other forms of hair removal. I’ve always loved the feeling of freshly shaved, silky-smooth legs, so finding ways to keep my skin looking and feeling smooth has become an important part of my beauty routine.
The tricky thing about strawberry legs is that there isn’t necessarily one single cause. For some people, those little dots are simply visible hair roots beneath the skin, while others may be dealing with ingrown hairs, clogged or irritated follicles, or dark marks left behind after irritation. That means the best approach can look a little different from person to person. In this post, I’m sharing some of the things that can help improve the appearance of strawberry legs, along with the hair-removal method I’ve been incorporating into my own routine: the ViQure EpiPro.

How to Get Rid of Strawberry Legs: 10 Tips for Smoother, Softer Skin
What Are Strawberry Legs?
“Strawberry legs” isn’t a medical diagnosis, but rather a term commonly used to describe the appearance of small dark dots or spots across the legs that can resemble the seeds on a strawberry. They may become more noticeable after shaving and can be related to several things include visible hair follicles, trapped hairs, ingrown hairs, clogged follicles, or irritation.
Shaving, waxing, and plucking can all irritate or damage hair follicles in some people, which can contribute to folliculitis or ingrown hairs. The appearance can also vary considerably depending on your skin tone, hair color, and hair texture, so there’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all explanation for strawberry legs.
What Causes Strawberry Legs?
Before figuring out how to get rid of strawberry legs, it helps to understand what might be causing them in the first place. Some of the most common contributors include:
- Visible hair roots or stubble: Darker, coarser hairs can remain visible beneath the skin even immediately after shaving.
- Ingrown hairs: A hair can curl back into the skin rather than growing normally, resulting in bumps or irritation.
- Clogged or irritated follicles: Shaving, friction, sweat, or other forms of irritation can affect the hair follicles.
- Post-inflammatory hyper-pigmentation: After irritation or an ingrown hair heals, it can leave behind a darker mark that takes longer to fade.
- Frequent shaving: Removing hair only at the surface means the follicle itself remains, so the hair begins growing back relatively quickly.
This is also why strawberry legs can look different from one person to another. Someone with fair skin and dark hair may notice the hair root showing through more prominently, while someone with deeper skin or curlier hair may be more likely to notice ingrown hairs and lingering dark marks. While the tips below can offer a starting point, your skin tone, hair color and hair type all should be taken into consideration. Let’s dive in!
10 Tips to Get Rid of Strawberry Legs
1. Be Gentle When Shaving
If shaving is part of your hair-removal routine, the way you shave can actually make a noticeable difference in how your skin feels afterward. Use a clean, sharp razor and a moisturizing shaving cream or gel rather than shaving dry, and avoid repeatedly going over the same area. This is the one I use (in pink, of course!).
It’s also important not to aggressively scrub your legs afterward in an attempt to remove every little bump or dark spot. When follicles are already irritated, additional friction can make things worse. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that doing so can damage hair follicles and contribute to folliculitis, so being gentle is an important part of caring for freshly shaved skin.

2. Exfoliate Without Overdoing It
Exfoliation can be helpful when you’re dealing with rough-feeling skin or clogged follicles, and ingredients such as salicylic acid and alpha hydroxy acids are commonly used in body-care routines. The key is consistency and moderation rather than trying to scrub strawberry legs away overnight.
A gentle chemical exfoliant can help smooth the surface of the skin, while a good moisturizer helps maintain the skin barrier. If your skin becomes irritated, dry, or sensitive, scale back rather than adding more exfoliating products. I also find gently using a dry brush a couple times a week to be very helpful as well (I use this one)! Either way, use exfoliating products consistently yet sparingly.
One last note – I do not recommend over-exfoliating or exfoliating on the same day that you shave or use any hair removal devices. Be kind and gentle to your skin <3
3. Keep Your Legs Moisturized
Sometimes the simplest step is also one of the most important. Applying a nourishing body lotion after showering helps keep your skin soft and comfortable, especially if you shave regularly or use exfoliating products. I love making body care feel like a little ritual rather than another chore. Applying lotion or body oil after a shower leaves my skin feeling smoother and gives me that extra bit of softness that makes me feel more put together (even when I’m just getting ready for bed!). I actually combine both an oil and lotion together for ultra smooth skin. Better yet, make it a full on at-home spa day!
4. Avoid Picking at Ingrown Hairs
I know how tempting it can be to pick at an ingrown hair or squeeze a little bump, but this can create additional irritation and increase the chance of leaving behind a dark mark. If you frequently experience painful or persistent ingrown hairs, it’s worth talking with a dermatologist rather than repeatedly trying to remove them yourself. And if the bumps are painful, spreading, unusually persistent, or look infected, don’t assume they’re simply strawberry legs. Conditions such as folliculitis can look similar, and a dermatologist can help determine what’s actually happening.

5. Consider a Different Hair-Removal Method
This is where things get particularly interesting! If shaving is contributing to the appearance of your strawberry legs, changing how you remove the hair may be more helpful long-term than simply trying to treat the skin after every shave. Shaving only removes hair at the surface. Laser hair removal, on the other hand, uses energy absorbed by the hair to reduce hair growth over time. Professional laser hair removal can also reduce the frequency of shaving and is associated with a reduced risk of ingrown hairs. That is one of the reasons I’ve personally been incorporating the ViQure EpiPro into my routine.
6. My EpiPro Solution for Strawberry Legs
I’ve previously shared a full review of the ViQure EpiPro, so I won’t repeat everything from that post here, but I’ve been loving it for this reason: rather than simply treating the appearance of the skin, EpiPro is designed to target the hair follicle itself. The EpiPro uses an 808nm diode laser, which is designed to deliver energy to the hair follicle and reduce hair growth over time. As the hair becomes thinner and less visible, there can be less of that dark-root or stubble appearance that contributes to the look of strawberry legs. When compared to shaving, light-based hair removal can reduce irritation to the skin and hair follicles, which can help reduce the likelihood of strawberry legs developing.
For me, this is what makes the idea of laser hair removal so appealing. Instead of constantly shaving and then trying to exfoliate and moisturize my way back to smooth skin, I’m addressing the hair-growth side of the equation as well. It’s a much more realistic long-term solution that can only mean one thing… bye bye Strawberry Legs! 😉

EpiPro vs. Traditional IPL for Strawberry Legs
If you’ve been researching how to get rid of strawberry legs, you’ve probably come across IPL devices. IPL and laser hair removal don’t use the same technology, even though both utilize light-based energy to target hair.
EpiPro uses an 808nm diode laser, while IPL devices use a broader spectrum of light. The goal with EpiPro is to deliver targeted energy to the hair follicle, which is particularly interesting when your concern isn’t simply unwanted hair but also the visible dots, stubble, and ingrown hairs that can accompany frequent hair removal. In comparison to IPL, the EpiPro’s 808nm diode laser delivers more concentrated energy, allowing for more thorough and faster hair removal, which can lead to faster improvement of strawberry legs and more noticeable results.
That said, results with any light-based hair-removal device can vary based on factors including hair color, skin tone, device settings, and individual response. Laser hair removal generally requires multiple treatments because hair grows in different cycles, and it’s not considered permanently guaranteed hair removal. However, in my experience, it’s drastically reduced the hair. Looking for more info on how laser hair removal works better for strawberry legs? Check out this article here.
7. Give Your Skin Time to Recover
It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking that more treatments, more exfoliation, or more products will automatically give you smoother skin faster. Sometimes your legs simply need a little time to recover. If your skin is irritated after shaving or another hair-removal treatment, focus on gentle cleansing, fragrance-free moisturizing, and avoiding additional irritation until it settles. Smooth skin is a long-term goal – not something you need to achieve in one night.

8. Protect Your Legs From the Sun
If you’re working on dark marks or post-inflammatory pigmentation, sun protection is especially important (but honestly, it’s super important for anything!). Sun exposure can make some types of pigmentation more noticeable, so applying broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed legs is a simple step that’s easy to overlook. This is particularly important if you’re using products or treatments that may make your skin more sensitive. When in doubt, follow the specific instructions provided with your treatment device or skincare products.
9. Wear Breathable Clothing When Your Skin Is Irritated
Friction can be another source of irritation, especially during hot weather or workouts. Tight clothing can rub against the skin and contribute to follicle irritation, which is one reason the American Academy of Dermatology recommends avoiding friction when you’re prone to folliculitis. When my skin is feeling particularly sensitive, I prefer loose, breathable clothing and give my legs a chance to recover rather than immediately piling on more products. I love wearing looser, lightweight dresses for this very reason! For workouts, I love workout dresses as well but I always change and shower immediately after I’m finished.
10. Be Consistent With Your Routine
This may be the least exciting tip, but it’s probably the most important. Whether your goal is to prevent ingrown hairs, improve rough texture, fade the appearance of dark spots, or reduce unwanted hair, consistency will usually matter much more than trying a dozen different products at once. For me, the goal isn’t necessarily perfectly poreless skin. It’s simply having legs that feel smooth, comfortable, healthy, and ready for all of my favorite summer dresses! Maintain consistency in product application and treatment methods (for example, use the ViQure EpiPro once a month for seamless results).
Can You Really Get Rid of Strawberry Legs?
The answer depends on what’s causing the appearance in the first place. If your strawberry legs are primarily related to visible hair roots, reducing hair growth may make a significant difference in how noticeable those dots look. If you’re dealing with ingrown hairs, irritation, or pigmentation, you may need to address those concerns separately as well.
That’s why I like thinking about strawberry legs as a combination of concerns rather than one single skin condition. A gentle skincare routine can support smoother skin, while a hair-removal method like laser hair reduction can address unwanted hair growth at its source. This is specifically why I love using the ViQure EpiPro!
How Long Does It Take to Get Rid of Strawberry Legs?
Unfortunately, there isn’t a universal timeline. Skincare products can take weeks or months to improve the appearance of pigmentation and texture, while laser hair reduction typically requires multiple treatments because not every hair is in the same growth phase at the same time. The good news is that you don’t need to completely overhaul your routine overnight. Start with gentle shaving and skincare habits, then consider whether a longer-term hair-removal solution makes sense for your needs like laser hair removal for strawberry legs. Personally, the ViQure EpiPro has been helpful in this regard. The sooner you start treatments, the sooner you can say goodbye to strawberry legs!

Does Laser Hair Removal Help Strawberry Legs?
When it comes to getting rid of or preventing strawberry legs, laser hair removal might be the best option overall. Chemical exfoliants like salicylic acid and AHA scrubs and lotions might take months to show results. Plus it doesn’t address the hair follicle itself and tends to rebound once your stop so consistent use is necessary. Standard IPL devices can help reduce hair growth, but dark dots and rough texture may take much longer to improve since the light energy is easily scattered by the upper layers of the skin.
Since the ViQure EpiPro uses an 808nm diode laser uses a higher effective energy density, it delivers energy more precisely to the follicle. Over time, the 808nm-wavelength laser hair removal thins and lightens the hair root helping it shed more efficiently. It also improves ingrown hairs and shortens the period where dark roots are visible, therefore creating the look and feel of smoother skin. The 808nm wavelength also penetrates more effectively while reducing unnecessary energy absorption in the epidermis, making it suitable for a wide range of skin tones including deeper skin tones. Overall, I feel like laser hair removal is the best option for consistently smooth skin and getting rid of strawberry legs!
My Favorite Strawberry Legs Routine
If I were putting together a simple routine specifically for smoother-looking legs, this is what I’d focus on:
Step 1: Use a gentle shaving routine when shaving is necessary.
Step 2: Exfoliate moderately rather than aggressively scrubbing.
Step 3: Moisturize consistently.
Step 4: Avoid picking at ingrown hairs or irritated follicles.
Step 5: Use sunscreen on exposed legs.
Step 6: Consider laser hair reduction if unwanted hair and visible hair roots are a major part of the problem. The ViQure EpiPro is my favorite solution for this!
Step 7: Give your skin time to recover between treatments.
For me, the biggest shift is thinking beyond simply removing the hair I can see. The goal is to reduce the cycle of shaving, stubble, irritation, and ingrown hairs that can make strawberry legs so frustrating in the first place.

Final Thoughts on How to Prevent Strawberry Legs
Strawberry legs are incredibly common and there isn’t one magic product or routine that will work for everyone. The first step is figuring out what you’re actually seeing – whether that’s visible hair roots, ingrown hairs, irritated follicles, dark marks, or some combination of the above.
I’ve found that the most promising approach is to think about both sides of the equation: taking good care of the skin while also considering how you’re removing the hair. That’s why the ViQure EpiPro is my go to. Rather than simply trying to make the surface of my skin look smoother, it gives me a way to address hair growth at the follicle level and potentially reduce one of the biggest contributors to those little dots over time.
And honestly, that’s what I love most about beauty routines: finding small changes that make you feel more comfortable and confident in your own skin. Whether you’re wearing a sundress, swimsuit, or simply enjoying a quiet day at home, smooth, healthy-feeling skin is always a lovely thing to have. I find that it makes me feel confident, beautiful and most authentic to myself – and that’s how we all deserve to feel! 😉
