Why It’s Okay To Be a Girly Girl

Today I’m talking about something I feel very strongly about…why it’s okay to be who we are and more specifically, why it’s okay to be a girly girl.

A while back,  a girl I’m friends with posted about how she was belittled for wearing a pink “girly” outfit to work. This really struck a chord with me as I realized that I, too, have been discriminated against and  judged by my girly girl personal style and appearance on a regular basis. The city in which I live is very conservative and many times, people do not have open minds about anything, especially in the fashion arena. Fashion is just not a thing here and I can’t tell you how many times I have been looked down upon because of my interest and desire to succeed in the fashion industry or because of the way I dress. Granted, I don’t wear ball gowns everyday, but I do like to make an effort in my appearance. However, because I don’t wear the same brands or styles as everyone else, I stand out like a sore thumb (and when I travel to LA, I realllyyyy stand out). The phrase I hear the most is “Wow! You look so fancy!” or “Why are you so dressed up?” even WHEN I’M WEARING JEANS. I’ve been called a “goody-too-shoes” more times than I can count and my girly girl style choices have had people questioning my intelligence and to me, that is extremely hurtful. Can a woman not be feminine AND smart? Does dressing “girly” make someone weak? Why is being feminine seen as a bad thing? This is exactly why people are so afraid to wear what they want and develop their own personal style…because everyone else has opinion. They discriminate and judge based solely on looks and style rather than getting to know the actual person and that is the saddest part because they are really missing out on what could have been an amazing friendship.

WHY IT’S OK TO BE A GIRLY GIRL

I’ve had so many people ask ..”Why do you like pink so much?” and “Why do you wear so many dresses?” Well, pink is my favorite color and I like the way I look in them. I also like the consistency is gives me on my Instagram feed. Of course, I have other colors in my wardrobe and I do wear them. Not everyone sees me on a daily basis…sometimes I wear blue, sometimes I wear black, sometimes I wear yoga pants *gasp!* But I always find myself reaching for my pink colored frocks because I love them and they make me feel beautiful. I wear dresses because I’m insecure with my hips and I feel they are the most flattering on my body type. I love the way they twirl and flow but most of all, I love the way they make me feel. I feel beautiful, put-together (with minimal effort), empowered (ironic, right?) and most like myself when I wear a dress…and if that isn’t a good enough reason to wear an article of clothing, then I don’t know what is.

Have I always dressed like this? Short answer, yes and no. My mom used to dress me up in frilly dresses with huge bows in my hair and I loved it! This didn’t stop me from playing outside in the mud, rolling down grassy hills or chasing my friends after a good game of hide and seek. Fast forward to high school…I taught myself to play guitar and joined a garage band full of guys. I felt pressured to look a certain way because now I was a “rocker.” I went through an emo phase that lasted a school year. I wore black band tees, spike bracelets and plaid pants with zippers all over them (if you can believe that). I always felt like I was in costume…playing a part..and never really felt quite like myself. I couldn’t understand it because I loved playing music and thought this was what musicians were supposed to wear. That’s when I decided to trade in my punk outfits for frilly skirts and went on with my life….garage band and all. Even with my girly personal style back, I could plainly see that I dressed differently than the other girls and although I got made fun of at times, I learned to accept it because that was who I was. Another example was when I was told that I couldn’t teach someone how to play musical based solely off of my appearance and what the parent perceived me to me. This has happened more than once and it’s so heartbreaking. The most recent incident was when I was subbing and let me just say that middle schoolers are cruel, especially to subs. My nickname was “Barbie” and not in an endearing way. These 12 year olds flat out picked me apart because of my outfit and because of my looks in front of everyone. One even asked if I had plastic surgery because “it looked like it.” Of course not! What does that even mean? It was like being in junior high all over again.

Regardless of what people think, this is who I am and I’m 100% okay with it. I am probably the girliest girl you will ever meet, but you will be surprised to know that I’m quite the tomboy too! I enjoy doing my make-up, dressing up, curling my hair, painting my nails and having at-home spa days. I wear tulle, sequins, pastels and lace …and I’m not sorry about it. I love having fresh flowers around, scented candles burning and watching gossip girl re-runs. What you don’t know is that I also love being outdoors…camping, fishing, shooting, skydiving, hiking, go-carts you name it. I play a “boy” instrument, can get dirty on the soccer field and wear giant sweaters with leggings on my “fat” days. I enjoy a good session at the gym (when I go lol!), think that snakes and lizards are cool and actually enjoy putting together furniture. But then again, I’ve never really been one to conform…always marching to the beat of my own drum.

The moral of the story is that we are more than what we wear and how we look. People see what they want to see and make judgements based on first impressions. We all have different personal style because we are all unique and different people. I find a lot of inspiration in other people’s styles and am constantly in awe of what they create. I may be the least edgiest person ever, but I do enjoy perusing edgy (and editorial) looks on Instagram and I find myself saving photos to my collection as inspiration…you know, just in case haha!

To be honest, after going through this for many, many years, I don’t really care what others think of the way I dress. I wear what I want, when I want because I want to and that’s the way it should be. What makes me upset is when someone else is bullied for their appearance or outfit because it’s too “whatever”…in this case, girly. You can be girly and strong. You can be girly and smart. You can be girly and fun. You can be girly and successful. And yes, you can be girly and masculine. I think that so many people have these false representations of what femininity actually is and as a result, stay as far away as possible for fear that they will be made fun of over some made up “rule.”

We should not be defined by what other people think we should wear or how they think we should look. We can dress sporty, bohemian, glam, edgy, preppy, eclectic, or feminine yet still be a business women, power-lifter, musician, lawyer, or rocket scientist. And what we wear doesn’t have to be defined by one style. We can mix styles creating a unique look that is all our own. We can wear a slouchy sweater and jeans or layer on embellishments, colors and items that “clash” and one is not more right than the other.

That’s the thing about personal style. You can make it all your own and be as tame or wild as you want in your outfit choices. It’s everyone else that has an issue but in the end, they are not you and they don’t ultimately know what makes you happy or makes you feel beautiful. Their words can only control your life if you let them and honestly, life is too short to be fearful of what others think. You do you and wear what you want because you love it, not because someone gave you permission. How can we be who we truly are if we’re always pressured to be someone else? If we all dress and look the same, how we would be fulfilling our purpose and what kind of message does this send to others about being proud of their individuality? You are you for a reason and there is no one else to take your place. You only live once…wear the sequins 😉

Have any of you ever been in this situation?

I’d love to hear your stories below!

Lizzy I’m so cross on your behalf! My style is completely different, but I adore your outfits. I just couldn’t carry them off as wonderfully as you do. They way you choose to dress suits you so well. You put them together so perfectly that they are always a joy to see. I am a huge fan of your skills. Obviously we can’t please everyone, but to think it’s OK to insult you or your friend to be ‘too’ anything is appalling. Don’t they know they just just have to leave the site if it’s not for them!? Brush it off my love, you are amazing and appreciated by many xx

Thanks so much Maria! I appreciate that so much. People say some crazy things, but I think its important to style true to yourself and do what makes you happy! Thank you for this reminder!

This is a beautiful dress, as always you have the best dresses! 🙂 I was pretty lucky growing up and managed to find friends and had family that supported me no matter what I wore – and that’s a good thing as I had some very questionable outfit choices, ha! Thank goodness I never had a blog then!

I think we should all wear what we want – we dress to please ourselves in the end, so it doesn’t matter what other people think! I love the constructive comments I get on my blog though when people have a different idea or way of wearing something, it’s really helped me look at my wardrobe differently. 🙂

Thank you for the link up!

Hope you are having a wonderful week. The heatwave continues here unfortunately, so uncomfortable!

You go girl! Oh man, I’ve had some questionable outfits choices too loL! Agreed! Constructive comments are always welcomed, but there comes a point when you have to do what you want to do because that’s who you are <3

I absolutely love this post! We all have to stop judging one another by appearances. I love your feminine vibe and appreciate it but it’s so sad that people expect others to dress or act a certain way. So glad you wear what you love because that is what makes you so special. I adore the dress and the gorgeous embroidery. Thanks for the link up!

I love this! My daughter is a lot like you and got criticized a lot in high school for always “dressing fancy”. I have a more casual style, yet I too “get the look” because people in my neck of the woods don’t seem to wear anything other than jeans, sweatshirts, leggings, or anything camo. Awhile back Ivanka Trump was criticized by feminists for wearing a pink dress to an event. I was so mad about what other women were saying about her. She looked absolutely stunning, but of course she was criticized because she looked “too girly”. The commentary made me sick. Anyway, I absolutely LOVE your dress. And do you seriously have trees blooming already where you live? It’s so cold and snowy here and will be for months. I’m so jealous!

    • February 22, 2018 / 8:07 pm

Yes! What is so wrong with dressing nice? Your town sounds A LOT like mine lol! I remember that! she looked beautiful and it broke my heart that people were treating her so awful just because she wore something that she liked!

  5. February 16, 2018 / 1:48 pm

You go girl! I think it’s fabulous when women wear what they want to wear. Whether they put effort in, whether it’s pink, whether it’s all black all the time. I think you have to find what works for you and own it! You look fabulous in all your dresses and its always inspiring to me! Happy Friday girlfriend!

That is so upsetting that a woman gets judged like that for looking put together a certain way. The manner in which we choose to clothe ourselves is not telling of our intelligence or our professional capabilities. A women who wears pretty dresses is no less a teacher than one wearing pants and a sweater!

    • February 22, 2018 / 8:05 pm

YES! Such a good reference. Dressing a certain way does not make us less than our counterparts <3

  7. February 16, 2018 / 2:31 pm

I love this post, because I can totally relate! I am always made fun of for being too girly, I have been make up shamed, told that I am vain and high maintenance and I do not care because this is who I am, take or leave it. It says more about the person making these comments. Maybe these shamers are just envious of your confidence and sense of self, it can be intimidating. You are beautiful, have an amazing personal style and are simply fabulous.
This look is gorgeous too! I hope you have a wonderful weekend Lizzie.

Yes, I’ve been accused of all of these too! People only see what they want to see and make conclusions about it without knowing the whole story. You have beautiful style! Wear what you want to wear because it makes you feel happy!

    • February 22, 2018 / 8:03 pm

Yes! Wear the jeans! You are never “too old” to wear anything. Wear what makes you happy and feels like you!

  9. February 16, 2018 / 3:01 pm

So well said Liz! You know I have VERY strong feelings on this issue; and I love that more and more women are starting to stand up and say; Hold on! I will NOT stop dressing the way I want to in order to make others happy. So glad you shared this post <3
    Also; LOVE your dress!

Lizzy, I am a feminine dresser and make no apologies for it. I love a romantic style and your look is just that! Beautiful! That dress is so gorgeus, i love the embroidered detailing on the tulle, and of course the color. i always feel people should dress in what makes them happy and shows their personality!

Preach! One of the reasons why I held off in starting a blog and sharing my love for fashion was because I thought people would discredit my intelligence. I’m a writer and I had this fear that if I published a novel people would associate the quality of my writing by the fact that I shared outfits.
I have more of a masculine personality, and I’ve always dealt with people looking at me and interpreting me one way and finding that I am a completely different person altogether. I remember at one point in my childhood declaring I was a tomboy because I thought that if I dressed a little more boyish people would expect me to have a more boyish personality and for that reason respect me more.
Well, I never did. I remember it was a pretty pastel yellow dress that made me change my mind on that. I knew it was something a tomboy would never wear, but I was like, “You know what, if people judge me by my appearance that’s there problem,” and that was that. (Score for my ten-year-old self.)
I’ve also been called Barbie in a bad way (though in later years as a complete compliment), and am frequently asked why I dress so nice. It’s funny, I was shopping yesterday and had to choose between a navy and white pinstriped jumpsuit and a pink sequined tulle skirt–and it was a hard choice! But I think that defines my style very well. I love menswear/suit pieces, but I love girly pieces and I cannot give up either.
Sorry for the huge answer, but I really feel strongly about this too, and your story relates a lot to mine. (Except I was a bit more hippie around all my goth friends.) XD

I have dealt with this more than you know. My intelligence has been questioned time and time again because of my interest in something as “superficial” as fashion. I do believe that we can be smart AND dress well. I think you are the perfect blend of masculine and feminine style and it definitely does not discredit your writing. When I read your posts, I feel like I see into your soul and the outfits just the added bonus. 😉

Liz, I am about to stand up at my desk and give you a standing ovation! Brilliant post, my friend! I have been on the same side of discrimination and nasty comments as you have been…all too many times. I am flashing back to high school when I was in my grunge/punk/goth phase and I had a history teacher who did not like me one bit. I did not like history…and carried a consistent B/C grade throughout the entire year. I did, however, love English. I always have and received my B.A. in English with honors. So one day, this history teacher was subbing in my advanced honors English class. She was taking attendance and got to my name, she looked up from her class roster, scowled at me, and in front of the whole class said “YOU are in an honors English class. Well. I can’t believe that.” And you see how that has effected me…30 years later, I still remember it like it was yesterday. Well, Ms. B*itch History Teacher, look at me now! And it still happens to me today. All the time. And your post keeps bringing to mind this quote that I recently shared on my IG account…Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did except she did it backwards and in high heels. So you rock on in your gorgeous pink heels, my friend, because you are powerful and strong and beautiful and feminine all tied up in a pretty pink bow!

YES!! Thanks so much Shelby! Okay, when I was in my emo phase, the same thing happened to me even though I was a great student! I don’t think people understand the power of their words and the effect it has on other people. They might think nothing of it, but it can life-altering. You go girl! You are doing amazing things! And I do love that quote 🙂

Whilst no one has asked me to my face about my dressing, I know that people do talk. I don’t let it bother me at all. In fact, I hate high heels but still confident that I am nothing but a lady. Very slim lower body and bigger upper, but I am me, that’s the way I was made. And I love me. I have to dress how I feel comfortable.

This is a lovely post! I grew up being a tomboy amd went threw a phase of emo to edgy to straight up diva glam haha. Where i live in virginia thats the same way. Living in a small town where people rather where camo than pink frills is sometimes no fun at all. I would iften get asked why im wearing heels to school uuuuh because i wamt to and it makes me feel confident. Now im in a phase of vintage styles with a mix of girly pinks. And i still get asked why i dress like an “old person” haha I just laugh. The older people love my style lol! Im such an old soul and i love this style and always have now im able to rock it with confidence! Ive been buying more pinks for my wardrobe because i loooooove pink so i guess im going to be a pink vintage mess to them haha😂!

That’s the thing about personal style: it’s personal! I think everyone should wear what they love and what makes them happy…the challenge, and why people get so up in your grill about your choices, is that many people aren’t confident in their own. That’s why sharing your style with the world is so important: you inspire others to do the same!

At the end of the day, it is OUR choice to dress the way we want and the only thing that matters is that we feel good about the choices we are making. You look stunning!

You look beautiful and you look like a movie star! I’m sorry you have been treated meanly about how you dress that is just wrong. You keep doing you.

Thanks so much Nicole! I appreciate it!

I am a total girly girl too! I haven’t worn pants in months and strickly wear skirts and dresses. I also dress super vintage and people always look at me weird. I haven’t gottten any negeative comments, usually people saying I like your coat etc. I am shocked to how rude people are to you about how you dress. I swear they must be just jealous or something. I love your style

Yessss! Big dresses and even bigger bows <3

Oh my gosh! I can so totally relate! I’ve been asked by people if I have special plans because of the way I dress and then laughed at when I tell them no. Such a great post! It’s absolutely okay to be a girly girl! You go girl!

I think wearing what makes you happy is so important. Weather that is a dress to your kiddos soccer game or yoga pants on date night. Whatever you feel beautiful in you should be wearing it!

Wearing color is so much fun and takes a lot of confidence! You go girl!

I absolutely love your style and this post! It is so true that people make snap judgements about us without really getting to know us. When I was working full time in my corporate job I mainly worked with all guys so they didn’t really care or notice what I was wearing, or at least I didn’t think so but the job I had held before made a number of comments about my outfits and how they thought I should dress to be taken more seriously.

Girl, I can SO relate! I used to work at a bank and they told me the same thing. I was stuck wearing neutral slacks and stuffy button up shirts day in and day out…and was SO unhappy! It’s important to wear what makes you feel good!

I’m right there with you! It surprises people to learn that I played soccer for 18 years and was a huge tomboy until college! At the end of the day, you need to be true to your heart and if your heart says wear pink, then do it!

I needed this post today! I also wear a TON of pink and sometimes feel like people will bash my style because it’s such a feminine color. I should never feel bad about buying a certain shade, or think that people won’t think it’s stylish enough because it’s so girly. LOVED THIS POST!

  49. February 22, 2018 / 7:48 pm

Totally agree, as a loud and proud feminist, we should all be free to wear whatever we want without fear of discrimination. Your outfit is beautiful by the way!

  55. February 23, 2018 / 8:13 pm

I feel the same, Elizabeth, but in the opposite spectrum. I’m almost always wearing something that has leather or spikes or metal, or all three elements. And I have tattoos, and I love 5″ heels, and red lipstick. For as long as I can remember, people who do not know me, think I am a stuck-up, snotty bitch (sometimes, they replace that with “slut”). Sigh. They think I am a party animal who drinks and smokes, and who must have smoked weed or pot at some point in my life. All of which couldn’t be further from the truth 🙂 like you. I’m a complete homebody who loves nothing more than to read a book, or cook, or go to the gym. I hate loud music and crowds, I don’t even like people very much in general, and have not smoked (anything) in my entire life. Anyway, the point is, corny as it sounds, the world is told to never judge a book by its cover yet continues to do so, without nary a thought for how (a) it makes the other party feel; or (b) how deeply ignorance can wound. I would love for all of us to do a self expose of sorts, collaboratively, and share how our personalities are often the antonym of our actual personas. That would make for very interesting reads 🙂

I’m sorry to hear that you’ve had negative reactions to the way you dress. It’s such a shame that some people feel the need to judge based solely on someone’s appearance. I love your style, you always look amazing. That dress is so beautiful. Thanks for linking up!

I had a similar conversation on my bookstagram the other day – but instead of chatting about clothing, and how people perceive you based on that, I was talking about reading and other forms of entertainment. It seems like no matter what we choose to love, how we choose to dress, talk, or spend our time, others will always have a problem with it in some way or another. It’s too bad! But I’m glad you’ve learned to love your own style and be proud of it. That’s what’s important!

    • May 22, 2020 / 12:17 am

Wow, this is so true! And you know, I’ve always been the people pleasing type and it’s taken me this long to realize that you have to do things for yourself instead of for others. Side note: I need to check out your bookstagram lol! What a fun idea!

What a beautiful dress, and you look absolutely fabulous in this gorgeous outfit.
I do so agree that we should all be true to ourselves, and I guess that I can best be described as a girly man. For me, male fashion is incredibly boring, and I much prefer to wear clothes that come from the women’s wardrobe – beautiful dresses, skirts, tops, cardigans, jackets, coats, shoes and boots. I love nothing more than putting together a stylish outfit to wear. xx

    • May 25, 2020 / 8:48 pm

I’ve always loved how chic and feminine your looks are, but I definitely understand that everyone doesn’t think that way. I agree that people should be able to wear what they want and stay true to themselves. For me, that goes for hairstyles I choose as well. It’s okay to be you! 🙂 xo

    • May 26, 2020 / 11:00 pm

Thank you so much Jamaria! My style just isn’t for some people, and that’s okay. I love it and that’s all that matters. Yes! Hairstyles are another way to express your style!

  70. May 28, 2020 / 7:30 pm

Lizzie, I can relate to so much in this post! I have always received sideways stares because of the way I dress. I will never quite understand why it makes people so uncomfortable. But you are so correct, we still have to embrace ourselves and make no compromises in the way we choose to express ourselves. You always look so amazing to me and I can tell that your outfits make you happy, so you are dressing exactly as you should be! Thanks for always keeping it real.

I’ve always loved your style Lizzie! Your dress is beautiful! I don’t wear dresses very often but I love to see them on other people. The world would be a very boring place if we all dressed the same. My daughter loves to wear pink and she gets teased sometimes because of it, but I tell her to wear whatever she wants. She seems to gain confidence from me having a fashion blog and she loves to dress up with me 🙂

This helped me so much!!! I’m 14 year old girl who struggles with embracing my femininity because of what others think, especially in junior high. I’m almost going into my freshman year and I’ve always feared that people would call me girly or super childish for liking cute kawaii things and the color pink. I come off as a bit of a masculine type of girl since I’m into videogames, shooting and military stuff, but this post was what I needed to hear. Most of the time I fear what my boyfriend thinks too because my room is full of pink pastel stuff, my walls have hello kitty on them and kawaii anime posters and my bed has stuffed animals on it, which I fear that he’ll think I’m stuck in the mind of a 10 year old. He said he doesn’t care what I like and truly cares for me which helped a bit but still made me question a lot secretly. I needed the reassurance and this post has just saved me from overthinking and being so insecure!
    Thank you so much!💖💗💗

    • May 19, 2021 / 6:03 pm

Aw thanks so much Sage! That means a lot! So happy to help <3 I completely know what you mean. I went through the same thing! I tried to change my style into something I wasn't and it just didn't work. I felt inauthentic and like I was wearing costume. Pink, frills and dresses just come so much more naturally and I'm glad that over time, I've gotten more comfortable in who I am and what I like. I no longer dress or act a certain way for others but rather I do it for myself because it makes me happy. And you can totally dress girly or like girly things and still have other interests! I have been playing guitar since I was 14 and by guitar, I mean like… metal guitar LOL! I also love camping, hiking, building things, etc. I used to play video games all the time. You can have both but for some reason, people think it should be one way…. that if you like pink, girly things then you must be weak, unintelligent and only into shopping and that just couldn't be further from the truth. And sometimes, we can feel insecure within ourselves and as a result, think that others don't accept us for who we are. I was this way with my husband as well but he never tried to change me. In fact, he got me the sweetest Hello kitty necklace when we first started dating 🙂 Anyway, I'm glad that this gave you the reassurance you needed <3 Thank you for sharing!!
