The most asked question I get each fall and winter is in regards to my coat collection! SO many of you have asked where I find my coats and have requested to see my collection on more than one occasion. Two weeks ago, I shared a portion in part one of my Winter Coat Guide – The Best Winter Coat Colors (10 in all!) along with 33 outfit ideas to recreate. When I asked how you wanted me to share, I got a 50/50 split of coat colors and coat types so I decided to make a post for each one 🙂 Today, I’m sharing part two of my Winter Coat Guide – 7 types of must-have winter coat styles at varying price points. While this does not encompass every single coat style out there, I’ve included the ones I wear the most (aside from the most traditional styles which can be seen in this post). You’ll notice that I tend to wear the same coats over and over but styled in different ways (especially my cream faux fur!!), which proves that you don’t need a million to be stylish. While I personally love them as much as I love dresses, I think that a few in varying styles and colors are certainly sufficient. I hope this guide helps you find your perfect winter coat!

Read on to learn more about the 7 must-have winter coat styles that you can add to your wardrobe!

Cape

In my opinion, the cape is the most underrated piece of outerwear and I think it’s primarily because most people don’t know how to style them. However, I did recently share 4 ways to style a cape so hopefully that helped a bit 😉 Capes are surprisingly easy to wear and very comfortable! It’s almost like wearing a blanket… a very chic blanket ha! I love throwing one on for those in-between days where it’s not that warm and not that cold. I think they look best paired with jeans or a mid dress/skirt.

Faux Fur Coat

Obviously, my love for faux fur runs deep… but what’s not to love? It’s glamorous, feminine and instantly elevates your look a few notches! As you can see, I wear my cream shaggy faux fur coat the most – I mean, I’ve probably worn it at least twenty times on the blog alone! Plus this particular faux fur coat style looks amazing styled for both casual looks (think jeans or a boho maxi dress) or dressy looks (a sequin dress or lace gown). It honestly looks amazing with everything – money well spent, for sure!

My newest love is this white leopard faux fur coat! I’ve always wanted a leopard faux fur coat but I’m very picky about the pattern. While I do love the traditional leopard, I felt that this one goes with more and looks a tad bit more glamorous… plus it just screams “Lizzie!” I think that everyone should have at least one faux fur coat in their wardrobe that can be styled multiple ways!

Coat with Faux Fur Collar

This is probably my favorite type of coat! It comes in many shapes from the streamlined princess cut and traditional wool to the belted trench or loose swing style. It almost has a vintage look to it and it honestly looks great with anything! The faux fur collar adds a touch of glamour and warmth but can easily be removed for a more casual look. Since I’m a more dressy person, I tend to go for the more fitted variations of this style but I love pairing the belted trench versions with my jeans (when I wear them ha!). I also really love the swing variations since it has a 1950s vibe and I actually was given an authentic vintage swing coat last winter! It’s the most beautiful shade of light green – I’ll have to share it with you guys this year 😉 I have this type of coat in a variety of colors but I definitely wear my blush pink and light blue ones the most. I think that everyone should own at least one of these, especially in a neutral like black, white or beige.

Parka

The parka is my go-to coat for everyday. They are super warm, comfy and stylish and I just adore the faux fur hood! This is the coat that I throw on when I head out to run errands or when we visit a chillier destination. Personally, J.Crew is unrivaled in the parka department! This one is the factory version but I do have a gorgeous pink one that from I acquired from J.Crew a few seasons ago. The only difference is the material and a few slight design variations but they do look nearly identical! J.Crew usually has prettier colors though and they typically go on sale for Black Friday (just in case you’re in the market for a parka).

Patterned Coat

Patterned coats are a lot of fun to wear! They make an outfit more interesting and just bring a smile to my face during the winter months. Plaid is always a crowd pleaser and probably the most versatile of the bunch. I recommend getting it in a neutral like black, grey, beige, or cream so you can wear it with more. I am also very drawn to florals (as you know) and jacquard fabrics or embroidered details. The black and purple one above is one of my very favorites and I usually wear it for special occasions or night time events because it’s just so glam! I also have a light black and white polka dot coat and a vintage houndstooth swing coat. Patterned coats aren’t for everyone but they do make an outfit so much more fun! If you decide to add this style into your wardrobe, I recommend spending less on trendy patterns and investing in more classic patterns such as the beautiful beige plaid above.

Trench Coat

Lightweight trench coats are great for transitioning seasons. They look incredible with jeans but you can easily pair with a dress or skirt combo. While the signature trench color is typically nude or camel, I always learn more toward blush pink just because it matches everything in my closet. The pink one in the first picture is an Asos find from yearssss ago and I’ve worn it so many times! It’s not only great for in between seasons but also for travel. It’s a great lightweight option for the plane and it comes in handy if the weather gets a bit chilly at your destination. For some people, this is an investment piece but for me, it’s more of a matter of function (but it still has to look cute haha).

Tweed Coat

I love the look of tweed in the fall and winter months! There’s just something so luxurious about it and it’s the easiest way to look more expensive. I typically wear lighter weight tweed blazers but I do love the look of the longer coats as well. Tweed tends to be more light weight or medium weight so this is another great one for transitioning seasons but every now and then you can find a super thick one (like the one above on the left) to keep you warm and stylish during the wintertime.
