For many women, a makeup vanity is a sacred space. It’s place where you can disconnect, destress and transform yourself into the most confident version of yourself. It’s also a haven for those like myself that love beauty products and displaying them in a aesthetic way. In this post, I’m sharing my latest DIY project where I transformed this vintage desk into the makeup vanity of my dreams. Upgrading my Makeup Vanity

 

It’s no secret that I love a good DIY project! Over the last decade, my makeup collection has grown immensely. With one tiny drawer, the small vanity I used previously (also DIYed) was no longer cutting it. A friend posted this vintage desk/vanity and chair on Facebook earlier this year and I jumped at it! I needed a bit of work but the potential was there (plus it matches really well with my existing furniture). I gave it a new home, some much needed TLC and turned this $60 set into my dream makeup vanity. Wondering how I did it? Check out the before and after below!

DIY Vintage Makeup Vanity Before and After 

 

While this vintage makeup vanity wasn’t in the worst condition, it was definitely pre-loved. There were marker stains, spots with chipped paint missing screws, and broken interior drawers. The first thing I did was get a paint match and touch up the problem areas on the vanity. I also wasn’t a fan of the way the chair was painted so I put a fresh coat of paint on that as well. Originally, I was trying to decide between light pink and white for the paint color but ultimately went with white since it matches my existing furniture (maybe I’ll change it to pink later on!). That said, I love how the floral cushion on the chair pops against the white!

From there, I decided that it needed metallic finishes. The handles were impossible to remove as they had been painted over so many times. For that reason, I opted for a metallic paint pen instead of spray paint. I had never used paint pen previously so I wasn’t sure what to expect but I love how it turned out! It was definitely a labor of love that took far longer than expected but the end result was worth it. I loved the gold so much that I included more details on the top drawer and chair. To finish it off, I got a mirror from Home Goods (the same one that’s in my bedroom) and added a large pink velvet bow (the one from my coquette Christmas tree decor!).

Wondering what I did with my old makeup vanity? I turned it into a skincare vanity where I store my beauty tools and favorite skincare products. It’s a relaxing place where I can sit down, decompress and treat myself to a dreamy self-care routine.

Massive Makeup Declutter

 

After the makeup vanity was finished, I started decluttering and organizing my makeup. The process took longer than expected but it was the perfect fresh start. If you are interested in seeing my makeup declutter and video DIY process of the vanity, check out the video below –

 

 

 

 

Organizing my Makeup

 

After decluttering my entire makeup collection, I organized everything that I decided to keep. To keep things organized in the drawers, I bought some pink organizing trays in varying sizes. I looked at so many different organizers and ended up going with these since you could basically customize them to whatever space you have. I loveeee how organized all of my drawers are now and it’s so easy to find everything! I had a few left over trays that I ended up using for my bathroom and skincare vanity. It makes my Type A heart so happy haha!! Plus I love the pop of pink that gives everything. Want to see how I organized everything? DIY Makeup Vanity Breakdown

 

So how much did this DIY cost me? Here’s a breakdown –

 

 

 

 

 

 

The entire project was just under $200, which is honestly a steal when it comes to makeup vanity sets in general (especially vintage ones!). This was a fun, creative and budget-friendly way to upgrade my space while sustainably giving this pre-loved “dream vanity” a new home. I rally love how it turned out and it’s made getting ready for the day so much more enjoyable!

I believe I told you this before but I am a substitute teacher, former full time teacher and for now I love blogging so much that I would love for it to become full time but for now I do several posts a week and gain inspiration from others such as yourself.
