When I was younger, I always wore a bow in my hair and my poofiest dress… not much has changed, I suppose lol. I’ve just always gravitated toward more feminine styles and designs and it’s no secret that my personal style leans more toward a Disney princess than the average person. But lately, I’ve been having a lot of fun adding in more masculine elements to my otherwise unapologetically feminine style. Read on to see how to seamlessly mix masculine and feminine style!

I don’t know about you but the weather has been absolutely crazy here! It went from nearly 100 degrees and sunny to 50 degrees and stormy seemingly overnight. It was actually fairly nice before we did this photoshoot but just as we began, it suddenly started pouring rain. This is the first time we’ve ever shot in the rain and as tricky as it was, we actually did it in record time and shot everything on a single lens (so many firsts lol!). Thankfully, I had my cozy Review Australia coat to keep me warm 🙂 Their pieces are always a staple in my wardrobe and I especially love their coats!
How to Mix Masculine and Feminine Style
It’s actually easier than you think to mix masculine and feminine style! And contrary to what people might believe, you don’t have to stick to one certain style when it comes to getting dressed. The fun of fashion is that you can play with different elements from certain styles and create your own in the process. I typically stick with styles that are ultra feminine, whimsical and slightly vintage but I also love mixing in boho elements and at times, menswear inspired pieces.
For this look, I took inspiration from the coat. It gave me a slight 60s vibe with the plaid (very Mad Men-esque) so I knew that I wanted to pair it with a mod mini skirt. You might be surprised to know that the skirt and coat are actually two different plaids and two slightly different color combos! However, they are similar enough that they work together perfectly to create the illusion of a matching set. Since the coat fabric and patterns and colors of both the skirt and coat lean more masculine, I decided to balance them out by pairing with some feminine elements.
How do I do that you ask? Look for items that have obvious feminine details like ruffles, Swiss dots, embroidery, pin tucking, embellishments, etc. Also look at fabrics – heavier fabrics usually lean more masculine while lighter fabrics read more feminine (tulle, chiffon, silk, etc). Color also plays a big part – I would personally go for a lighter neutral or soft pastel. You want something that compliments the masculine pieces in a way that doesn’t take away from them or outshine them in anyway. For this outfit, I decided to add a classic white blouse that showcases both ruffles and embroidery and while it sounds like a busy combo, it’s designed in a tasteful way that doesn’t overpower.
Another way that you can mix masculine and feminine style is through accessories! A beautiful piece of jewelry, a top handle bag or pair of gorgeous heels always compliments masculine pieces perfectly. Just like clothing, you can do this by adding items with feminine details (bows, embellishments, etc), color or design. In my case, I utilized all three by adding a pair of pink bow heels and a pink pearl embellished circle bag. Although, these elements are true to my personal style, you can absolutely still look chic by adding different elements (including not wearing pink!). This skirt, top and coat combo would work equally well with a pair of sneakers, loafers, or oxfords and a structured handbag. And while these “rules” can certainly help mix masculine and feminine style, the fun of fashion is that anything goes and you can look stylish by not only experimenting with different things but also by having confidence in your personal style. 😉
