By nature, I’m a very positive, happy-go-lucky type of person. I’m always laughing, wearing a huge smile and probably busting out some silly dance moves (likely in the car haha!). That’s just who I am. But that’s not to say that bad things don’t ever happen and that I don’t ever feel upset or sad or angry. You see, when you’re a smiley person, everyone assumes that your life is perfect. When you post photos of yourself online for the world to see, that’s the ONLY thing they see and even in person, they don’t look past the way you look and the way you present yourself. Assumptions are based solely on what you see on the surface rather than on reality. You don’t see the tears of frustration, relationships falling apart, stubborn health issues, uncertainty in career changes, constantly being told no and the struggle of not being good enough. The thing is that we go through these hardships but most people don’t realize it. You just never know what someone else is going through. And while I go through hard times just like everyone else, I try to change my outlook on things and still choose to think in a positive way. Below, I’ve listed four simple ways to stay positive.

Four Simple Ways to Stay Positive

Surround Yourself with Positive People

This one is so so important! I never realized how many negative Nancy’s there are out there ha! And I am the type of person that feeds off of other people’s energy. When I am around a negative person that is constantly complaining, it brings me down. It makes me feel unmotivated, uninspired and unworthy. After years of dealing with these emotions, I made the decision to cut out certain people from my life. This was not easy by any means, but sometimes you have to do what is necessary and what is best for you and your mental health. Removing the negative energy has worked out in the most amazing way! When you do this, you replace this energy with people that support you, inspire you and motivate you to be the best person you can be. And I know that right now, most of us aren’t able to physically spend time with those that lift us up so I recommend scheduling phone calls or video chats with the ones you care about <3

Actionable advice: Schedule a phone call or video chat with your favorite people!

Change Your Outlook

Changing your outlook takes a lot of practice. It’s easy to feel sorry for yourself and think that you are alone, but you most definitely aren’t. Instead, try to think of your situation critically. Why did this happen and what can I do to fix it? A lot of times, things are out of our control and in this instance, you must accept this as difficult as it may be. Sometimes we don’t know why things happen or if it can even be fixed and this is where remaining hopeful and having a positive attitude works wonders. Having a positive attitude even in the most dire of circumstances, shows that you are able to adapt to change and willing to accept. People will be drawn to you and you will be a happier person overall because you CHOOSE to be.

Actionable Advice: Start a gratitude journal and write about everything you’re thankful for each day (even the smallest of things!).

Know That  Most Things Work Out for Good

This is hard for many people to fathom, but I truly believe that *almost* all difficult situations eventually work out for good. I can truly, truly say that nearly every terrible, awful, and heartbreaking situation that I’ve endured has had a silver lining…. because I’ve chosen to see it These situations have worked out in my favor down the road and have opened the doors for opportunities that I would not have presented themselves otherwise. This may take days, months or even many years to see exactly why you had to go through these circumstances, but eventually it will show itself and you will understand that you had to go through that in order to get to a better place. Let me just say that I’m not downplaying anything at all here. It’s so difficult and sometimes situations that are completely out of our control are just a bit unfair. The beauty is trying to see the good in it and remaining hopefully that things will work out.

Actionable Advice: Try meditating for a few minutes each day and when a negative thought comes into your head, try to replace it with a positive one <3

Practice Self Love

We are SOOO hard on ourselves! Myself, included. We always think the worst about ourselves…we aren’t good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, blah blah blah. YOU are enough. We all have unique traits and characteristics. We all excel at certain things and have things about ourselves that are less than exceptional and that is okay! We are not perfect! And as a perfectionist, I struggle with this one more than anything and I have to remind myself DAILY. One thing that really helps me is keeping a list of my achievements, no matter how big or how small, and to look back on this list when I’m having a tough day. This is a great way to remind yourself of how much you have accomplished and how amazing you truly are! Also, taking time for yourself it so SO important and right now, more than ever, we owe this to ourselves. Whether that’s trying a new workout routine, sitting outside with a good book, or treating yourself to a DIY spa day, practicing self care is one of the most important things you can do for yourself.

Actionable Advice: Do something for yourself every single day! Check out this post for some great ideas 🙂
