With my body type being both petite (I’m under five foot!) and a curvy figure, finding clothing that fits correctly can sometimes be a challenge. I’m very pear-shaped with my top half being two sizes smaller than my bottom half making certain clothing items off limits. However, over the years I’ve learned to embrace my curvy figure and through trial and error, have found items that both flatter my shape and make me feel good about myself. Through this process, I’ve learned a few tricks on how to dress my body type.
HOW TO DRESS A CURVY FIGURE
Be Confident
Confidence is key! You want to choose pieces that not only look amazing on you, but also make you feel like a million bucks! Isn’t that point of fashion anyway? Don’t be afraid to be bold and colorful! Be confident in your outfit choices, but more importantly, in yourself.
Buy the Correct Size
Buying a size larger or smaller can overwhelm or make you feel uncomfortable. Buying the correct size is a simple thing that you can do to ensure that you feel the absolute best in your clothing!
Choose the Right Silhouette
While we all have different body types with many specific cuts that are uniquely flattering to our shape, there are also many that are universally flattering, especially for us curvy ladies! I find that A-line or fit-and-flare styles are the most flattering on my shape since it creates a beautiful and feminine silhouette that cinches in at the waist and just grazes over the hips.
Prioritize Luxe Foundations
A look that turns heads starts with what’s underneath. Treat yourself to smoothing briefs, a perfectly fitted bra, and the kind of shapewear that lifts and supports without pinching. When you’re craving an extra dose of cinch for a date night or big event, modern lightweight corsets slip under dresses or blouses to define your waist while still letting you breathe and move with ease. With comfortable, confidence-boosting foundations in place, every outfit you layer on top will fall more elegantly and feel even better.
Balance your Shape
I find that for any body type, it’s important to create well-proportioned balance within your outfit. If you wear a voluminous bottom like a full skirt or wide-leg pants, you’ll want to balance it out with a slim-fitting top and if you wear a looser fit top, you’ll want to pair it with a slimmer bottom such as a pencil skirt or skinny jeans. You can also balance out your outfit with varying necklines and the right accessories.
