Who would have thought that I’d be prancing around in a full-on BROWN outfit (with no pink in sight lol)? Orange and brown have been my least favorite colors since I can remember. As for actually wearing them? Well, that just never happened… until now. Although I’m lover of pink and pastels, I’ve become quite fond of brown these days (and dare I say, burnt orange?). I have to say that the dark academia fashion trend has expanded my style in all the best ways.
Brown tones and darker neutrals are the basis of dark academia fashion, a trend that romanticizes knowledge, literature and classical studies (think Ivy League). The dark academia fashion trend incorporates a slightly vintage aesthetic and alludes to the look of a school uniform. It includes items like tweed blazers, plaid coats, turtle neck sweaters, white button down shirts, trousers, longer skirts, Houndstooth prints, etc. The colors are darker often incorporating brown, grey and black to give off that “rainy day” vibe. This is exactly why I feel it’s perfect for fall! The thing about trends is that you can take inspiration from them and create something completely unique based on your own personal style.
How I Styled the Dark Academia Fashion Trend
For this look, I used this Elie Tahari coat as my starting point. I fell in love with the rich brown color and dreamy plaid pattern. It’s very academic-looking yet modern and perfect for the season. I paired it with a cozy cashmere turtleneck sweater and brown suede mini skirt. I absolutely love the mix of textures among these fabrics! To finish off this dark academia outfit, I included a stunning beige handbag, a cream pearl beret and a unique pair of ankle boots (it looks like a pair of heels with socks!).
I think the overall look is very classy and elevated. This is one of those looks that mixes feminine and masculine style beautifully! I just love this trend and look forward to wearing it more this season.
