Where to Stay in Carmel-by-the-Sea: Hofsas House Hotel

For a truly authentic Carmel experience, stay at Hofsas House Hotel. It’s a pink, Bavarian-style inn perched on a hillside just a short stroll from Ocean Avenue. Family-owned and delightfully warm, it offers cozy fireplaces, ocean-view balconies, two saunas and a heated pool. The vintage mural at the entrance is said to be one of the most photographed spots in town, and for good reason—it’s charming, unique, and perfectly embodies the spirit of Carmel.

Hofsas House is ideal for those who love boutique accommodations with a personal touch. With complimentary breakfast, Dutch doors that let in fresh ocean air, and pet-friendly options, it captures everything there is to love about staying in this quaint coastal town. Plus it’s PINK! *swoon* We’ve stayed four times and each time is more magical than before.

Travel Tip: Most inns are walking distance from everything so you can leave your car and explore the village by foot! Hofsas House specifically is super close to everything – the beach,. shopping, downtown, restaurants, etc.

Things to Do in Carmel by-the-Sea

1. Wander Ocean Avenue & Carmel’s Secret Passageways

Carmel shopping is unlike any other! The main street is a dreamy strip of boutiques, bakeries, and art galleries. Grab a latte and window shop through Carrie Bradshaw-worthy storefronts. Or better yet, wander around no agenda! With many secret passageways to explore, taking a stroll through downtown Carmel by-the-Sea is an adventure in itself (and one of my favorite things to do). You will absolutely feel like you are living in a fairytale!

2. Visit Carmel Beach

Carmel Beach is wide, pristine, and impeccably beautiful with white sand and dramatic cypress trees framing the shoreline. It’s the perfect place for a barefoot walk at sunset, a cozy seaside picnic, or just a relaxing moment listening to the waves. Wear a flowy dress and bring along a picnic for the picture perfect day or experience golden hour magic with white sands, turquoise surf, and the most breathtaking sunset.

3. Explore the Fairytale Cottages

Carmel is famous for its storybook architecture. Don’t miss the Hansel House, Tuck Box, and the Comstock Cottages for the ultimate whimsical photo ops. Cottage of Sweets is also super Instagrammable!

A walk through Carmel’s side streets will lead you to whimsical fairytale cottages originally designed by Hugh Comstock. These storybook homes complete with thatched roofs, stone chimneys, and arched wooden doors, feel straight out of a fantasy novel. Keep in mind that many are private residences so always be respectful (and some are a bit of a walk but the stroll alone is worth it).

4. Wine Tasting

Stroll to Carmel-by-the-Sea’s Wine Walk, where you can sip local reds and rosés at darling tasting rooms like Dawn’s Dream Winery (founded by a woman and dripping in feminine charm!).

5. Art & Galleries

Carmel has over 100 art galleries! Pop into Gallery MAR or Jones & Terwilliger for coastal-inspired pieces that feel like sunshine on canvas. I personally love Zantman Art Galleries – it’s like going on a journey of artistic wonder with so many beautiful pieces to see. But my favorite will always be the Thomas Kinkade Studio for the nostalgia alone. It’s also home to one of the most beautiful secret passageways and garden in the entire village!

6. Visit the Carmel Mission

Founded in 1771, The Carmel Mission Basilica is one of the most beautiful historic sites on the California coast. With peaceful gardens, original adobe architecture, and a small museum, it’s a serene and meaningful stop for anyone who appreciates history, artistry and stunning architecture. This is also where Father Serra is buried! We’ve been several times and it’s one of my favorite missions.

7. Take the Scenic 17-Mile Drive

Just a few minutes from downtown Carmel, 17-Mile Drive is a must-do coastal route that winds through forested cypress groves, rocky cliffs, and sparkling ocean views. Famous stops like The Lone Cypress, Bird Rock, and Pebble Beach Golf Links offer incredible photo opportunities and peaceful places to pull over and soak in the scenery. The drive is perfect in the late afternoon as the light begins to soften. Bring a picnic lunch for the beach or simply cruise with the windows down and the sea breeze in your hair. If you’re visiting from out of the country, use United States eSIM to stay connected, check the weather and easily navigate between stops.

Must see stops:

  • Spanish Bay Beach
  • Point Joe
  • Bird Rock
  • Seal Rock
