Most people think that fairytales don’t actually exist but I’m here to tell you that they are very real and even more magical than you can imagine! Carmel by-the-Sea is known as one of the most beautiful towns in California (and very likely, the world – its that charming). In the heart of this photogenic village is a treasure trove of fairytale cottages, stunning ocean views, colorful blooming florals and of course, the iconic (and super instagrammable) pretty pink hotel known as Hofsas House.
I’ve shared about Hofsas House on here in the past (see my first impressions and Hofsas House Hotel review here along with hotel tour here)… and actually, this was my 4th visit to the hotel! With so many charming hotels in Carmel California, why do I keep coming back to Hofsas House, you ask? Is it really the best hotel in Carmel by-the-Sea? I’m sharing all of this and more below. The moment you arrive at Hofsas House, it feels like you’ve stepped into a European village. This family-owned boutique hotel has been a part of Carmel’s story since the 1940s, and its timeless charm is evident in every detail—from the hand-painted murals to the Dutch doors and cheerful pink exterior, this Bavarian beauty is definitely a sight to behold.
Located just a few blocks from Carmel’s quaint downtown, it’s perfectly situated for exploring on foot. Whether you’re strolling to the beach, browsing the art galleries, or grabbing brunch at a local café, everything feels delightfully close yet wonderfully quiet.

Best Boutique Hotel in Carmel: It’s Warmly Welcoming (and Pet-Friendly!)
One of the sweetest things about Hofsas House is how cozy it feels – it’s like a home away from home. The staff is kind, thoughtful, and full of local recommendations. While the hotel itself is absolutely gorgeous aesthetically, I have to say that the best part about Hofsas House is the owner and staff. I just adore them so much! And if you’re wondering, yes, they welcome furry friends too! Carmel is an incredibly dog-friendly town, and this hotel makes traveling with pets easy and enjoyable. It’s definitely one of the top pet-friendly hotels in Carmel!
Hofsas House Rooms Are Cozy, Spacious, and Full of Character
Each room at Hofsas House has its own unique layout and décor—no cookie-cutter spaces here! My room had a fireplace, ocean-view balcony, and vintage-style furniture that made it feel more like a private cottage than a hotel. Some rooms even have kitchens, which is perfect if you’re planning a longer stay or just love the idea of breakfast in your pajamas with ocean mist in the air. Other in-room amenities include:

My Favorite Room at Hofsas House Hotel
Each time, I’ve stayed at Hofsas House, I’ve been given a completely different room and honestly, this is part of the magic! A few years ago, I was lucky enough to tour a handful of rooms just see how different they are (see the post here). This room had actually just finished being updated with the hand-painted door and headboard. I was smitten with the color scheme, the uniqueness and the overall feel of the room. It’s so whimsical and very cottagecore-esque!
For the first visit, I stayed in a princess-y room with light blue bedding and butter yellow striped wallpaper (see it here) and the last time, I was in a dreamy room with floral wallpaper and bedding AND a pink bathroom! It was straight out of Loveshackfancy catalog (see it here). Each room is so special with unique design and character. You never know what you’re going to get! 🙂
In my case, I got room 36, which seems to be a guest favorite (and now my favorite!). It’s very spacious with a comfy bed, darling bistro set, cozy chairs and warm fireplace (perfect for those cool Carmel nights). The bathroom area was also quite spacious as well (see a full room tour here). And as if that wasn’t enough, this room includes a private balcony with a view of the ocean. The dutch doors were also perfect for letting in a cool breeze during the day and the natural light created the dreamiest ambiance.

Carmel by-the-Sea Hotel with Ocean Views (Absolutely Breathtaking!)
Like I said, this room has a gorgeous view of the ocean (although it was cloudy when we went). On a clear day, you can see the Pacific stretching out in the distance from many of the rooms. Early mornings feel especially peaceful here, with the fog gently lifting over the rooftops and the sound of seagulls in the breeze. It’s like waking up in a painting. Don’t have a room with a view? No problem! There is a viewing deck on the 4th floor that is perfect for reading, relaxing or watching an incredible sunset. This is where we spent a lot of time during our first trip!
Complimentary Breakfast and Wine Pairing
Each morning from 8-10am, you’ll find a simple European-style breakfast in the lobby—think fresh pastries (delivered from a local bakery), fruit, coffee, hot chocolate, tea and orange juice. Feel free to enjoy in the lobby or take a tray full of goodies to your room or the viewing decking. It’s the perfect start to a slow, relaxed morning. And if you’re in the mood to treat yourself, don’t miss their curated wine and cheese pairing experience featuring local Monterey wines.
Hofsas House is the Perfect Place to Relax
Tired of walking around downtown Carmel? Looking for a simple escape for an hour or two? Treat yourself to some TLC and take advantage of everything that Hofsas House has to offer! There is a heated swimming pool that is open year round for guests so be sure to pack your swimsuit. Most inns do not have this luxury so it’s definitely a plus! If you’re in need of some self-care after your swim, there are also two dry saunas available (one for women and one for men).
The Hofsas House Hotel is a Cottagecore Dream!
Another thing I love to do when I stay at Hofsas House is just walk around the inn. The grounds are exceptionally gorgeous! With blooming florals like English roses, vibrant camellias, and lush greenery, Hofsas House really does feel like you’re living in a cottagecore dream! When placed up against the soft pinks of the hotel itself, it’s certainly a feast for the eyes – an actual daydream come to life.
What’s Nearby? The Best of Carmel-by-the-Sea
One of the biggest perks of staying at Hofsas House is the location! You’re just minutes away from:
- Ocean Avenue for shopping, dining, and art galleries
- Carmel Beach, perfect for beach picnics and sunset strolls
- 17-Mile Drive for one of the most scenic drives on the California coast
- The Mission Ranch Inn (owned by Clint Eastwood!) for a sunset dinner with a view
- Brophy’s Tavern, a cozy, rustic spot for cocktails and hearty food
Hofsas House also offers free parking—such a rare luxury in Carmel!

In a town that already feels like a storybook, Hofsas House Hotel somehow manages to make everything even dreamier. It’s warm, whimsical, and full of heart—an ideal spot for those who appreciate charm, comfort, and a touch of vintage romance. This is why I truly think it’s the best Carmel by-the-Sea hotel! I’ve never stayed anywhere else because Hofsas House has everything I need and more.
