Before I get into the post, I just have to gush on these photos for a second. When thinking of locations to shoot, I was at a complete loss. I knew I wanted something different but just wasn’t sure where to go. I thought about driving out to the desert but we ultimately settled on a field…any field. While we were enroute to the field, I noticed these gorgeous florals tucked away. I drove a few miles further before finally turning around. I told my husband that we were going to “try it out” and that he had full reign to shoot however he wanted. These were the result and I’m over the moon! I hope you all love them as much as I do <3
Anyway, on to my lessons learned from NYFW. This year was SO much fun but as a newbie, I’m still learning everything as I go. When people think of NYFW, they think about all the glitz and glamour of fashion shows and trust me, it definitely is all of that but there is so much more to it.
Don’t Overpack Your Schedule
This was a hard lesson learned this year. Since everything is SO last minute, it almost feels like you may not have any show invites at all so you say yes to everything! Luckily, I knew from last year that invites come up until a few hours before a show. I waited until right before I left to create my schedule and RSVPed to the shows that I was interested in that also fit within that schedule. The only thing was…I scheduled WAY too much. For the first three days, I was running around from show to event to party to showroom from sun up to sun down…literally. Traffic was much worse than last year and I ended up not having enough time to eat or even just to rest. On the first day, I ended up feeling so sick by the end of the night because I hadn’t eaten all day. Definitely not the glamorous fashion week experience I wanted, but I’ll definitely be better prepared for next time. Also, I just want to note that there are no complaints here at all – I just think it’s an important reminder to take care of oneself, especially when it comes to something at crazy as fashion week 🙂 I fought through the sickness and still had so much fun!
Dedicate a Day to Shoot Outfits
I completely under-estimated how jam packed my schedule would be this year. I just figured that it would be so much easier to shoot each day’s outfit as I wore it and boy, was I wrong because 1.) there was absolutely NO time and 2.) the weather was unpredictable. Last year, the weather was perfect and this year was another story. It poured rain pretty much all day everyday making it difficult to get any good shots plus running all over town made it impossible to go to my planned shooting locations. I ended up having to reshoot almost all of my outfits in a one hour rain-free window on the morning that I left. Moving forward, I think it might be smarter to dedicate a whole day to shooting outfits. Doing it this way ensures that you’ll get the shots you want without being rushed or stressed out on show/event days.
Bring Along the Essentials
One thing I learned from last year is to be prepared! Running from show to show will leave you with very little time to stop for food or drinks. This year, I brought along a tote with me everyday full of snacks (after the first day lol!), water, a pair of flat shoes, extra makeup for touch ups and any else I may need throughout the day. Some events will have bottled drinks and snacks so I always made sure to stock up on these items to use later on. I also highly recommend bringing flat shoes if you aren’t wearing them because your feet are bound to end up sore and blistered by the end of the day.
Be Open Minded and Flexible
I think it’s super important to be open minded when going to NYFW because things can change just like that. I received a lot of last minute invitations or invitations to things that I initially wasn’t sure about but they ended up being amazing! I tried a lot of things for the first time: the subway, Shake Shack, Thai food, a sample sale, etc and enjoyed all of them! Unfortunately, I was thrown a curve ball when the weather ended up cancelling and postponing certain shows. Suddenly, I found myself with all this free time in my schedule and had no idea what to do with it. In the end, I ended up attending some last minute events, checking out more of the city, and spending time with my room mates making fun memories.
What You See is Not Always What You Get
This was definitely a difficult lesson learned and probably the least expected. When you follow people on Instagram, you imagine them to be the same way in person. You expect them to have the same sweet personality they show on their stories and the same fun-loving candor that you see in their photos. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. It’s extremely disappointing to meet people in person and realize that they are the exact opposite of what they portray on social media. To me, it was upsetting to be deceived this way and to find out that these people preyed on others with their mean girl tactics to make themselves feel better. I do not support that.
On the other hand, I will say that most people you meet are exactly who you think they are and that’s refreshing. It’s so incredible to meet so many ladies with different backgrounds that all share a similar love for fashion and each time I’m in New York sitting at a fashion show, I think to myself that I’ve finally found my tribe <3
Which of these lessons learned from NYFW was the most surprising to you?
