Happy Monday, loves!
When the weather starts to transition into something remotely resembling spring, I (like many others) go into full on spring cleaning mode. I love this time of the year because I feel like the appearance of sunshine brings about excitement for the new season and essentially, a fresh start. Most people only declutter their homes but this season, I’m decluttering my life and I’m sharing how you can too in my ultimate spring cleaning guide below.
THE ULTIMATE SPRING CLEANING GUIDE
When you hear the phrase “spring cleaning,” we immediately think of going through an abundance of material items that we don’t need anymore in hopes of bringing in something new and fresh or just having a clutter free home. But decluttering is so much more than that and the change in seasons gives us the motivation we need to get rid of a few things that are holding us back and start fresh. I’ve been doing major damage control over the last few weeks to clear my space, my mind and my heart and it has been so gratifying! Here are some of the things I’ve been doing:
Declutter Your Space
I don’t know about you but I am one of those people that absolutely cannot concentrate if I’m in a room that is cluttered and chaotic. Because of this, I feel like I’m constantly going through things and organizing my space.
*I actually go through my closet every month just to keep things from getting too crazy, but I recently did a HUGE overhaul and it feels like a weight has been lifted. I went through EVERYTHING and got rid of items that I haven’t worn in a year, didn’t fit, or were no longer my style. I also went through a box of some of my all-time favorite items that no longer fit and realized that I couldn’t hold on to them any longer (they were tucked away for yearsss)…so away they went. Tears were shed, but I feel so much better knowing that I have a closet full of clothing that I will actually wear and that I can actually SEE because it’s not stuffed to the brim. It was nice to sell a few items and update my wardrobe with some new spring items like this gorgeous sweater and these adorable heels. Plus, it made me feel better knowing that all of the clothing I donated would make a difference in another person’s life and go to someone else that needed it much more than I did.
*After going through my closet, I went through the rest of the apartment and realized that there were SO many things that were just taking up space and weren’t being used. Although, I do have a quite expansive collection of clothing and accessories, I’m fairly conservative when it comes to the rest of my home. I really like living in a simple, clean space so getting rid of unused items was a no-brainer.
*When I’m overwhelmed, I have a tendency to walk around from room to room trying to figure out how in the world it got to be so disorganized. I start organizing one thing and move on to something else when I feel too overwhelmed. Seeing as I was getting nothing accomplished this way, I decided to break my organizing up and do one room at a time starting with my office. It worked out so much better! Now, I have a clean and clutter free workspace and even had room to create a little lounging area that has become my favorite place in the apartment!
*My bathroom is another story… let’s just say that I might have one too many products haha! This is definitely on the agenda for this week 😉 After all, things are so much easier to find and much more likely to be used if you know where they are.
Declutter Your Mind
*I am the queen of making to-do lists. Life can feel chaotic at times and I find that it’s best to write down EVERYTHING (even the smallest task) to ensure that it all gets done and you don’t end up stressing out about that thing you forgot to do.
*I’m a huge fan of yoga because of it’s ability to de-stress. I find that when I do it, my body and mind are more relaxed and I feel so much better afterwards. Another thing I’ve been doing lately is taking time to meditate, even if it’s just for a few minutes.
*Being active is another great way to clear your mind. I, personally, love to go on hikes and walks (or just to be outdoors in general), but going to the gym or a class is a great way to decompress as well.
*Sometimes I find myself procrastinating to get little tasks done and I always regret it. This season, I’m setting the intention of getting tasks done as soon as possible. Doing these immediately reduces the stress of having to do them later and results in more time to do other things rather than being weighed down by all of the things you promised yourself that you would do “later.”
Declutter Your Heart
*Ridding myself of toxics relationships this past year has been one of the best things I’ve done for myself. When you do this, you take off so much unnecessary stress and instead of concentrating all of your time on trying to please other people, you make time for yourself and your happiness.
*Forgiving others is so important. When you stop holding grudges, you open up more space in your heart for giving love and receiving love.
*Stop comparing yourself to others and concentrate on being your best self. When you put your focus on other people and their seemingly “unattainable lives,” not only are you setting yourself up for failure, but you are creating an unhealthy lifestyle for yourself. Understand that you are good enough and use the time that you spend comparing yourself on things that can not only help you grow as a person, but can help you live the life that you dream of.
I hope this spring cleaning guide inspired you to get a jump start on your spring cleaning! Let me know if you have anything else to add 🙂
